Got a hen showing some worrying signs. Started about 3 days ago.
She’s sitting fluffed up, tail pumping slightly when breathing. Not eating much. Droppings are greenish and watery.
No discharge from eyes or nose that I can see. Other birds seem fine so far.
Already isolated her. Anyone seen this before? Thinking respiratory but not sure.
Classic respiratory presentation. Could be a few things:
- Ornithosis (most likely given the symptoms)
- Mycoplasmosis
- One-eye cold in early stages
The green watery droppings suggest she’s not eating, which tracks with how sick birds behave.
Here’s what I’d do:
- Keep her isolated and warm
- Get a course of Doxycycline - 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of water for 7-10 days
- Watch the other birds VERY closely
Whatever you do, don’t wait too long. Respiratory stuff spreads fast. If she’s not improving in 48 hours, consider a vet visit for proper diagnosis.
Good luck!
Had the same thing go through my loft two years back. Lost three birds before I got it under control.
Treat the whole loft, not just the sick one. By the time you see symptoms, others are already infected. Trust me on this.
