Want to build my first loft but on a tight budget. Maybe $500 max.
I know that’s not much. Looking for about 20 birds capacity to start.
Any tips on cutting costs without compromising bird health? Reclaimed materials? Simple designs?
Seen some garden shed conversions - anyone done that successfully?
Shed conversions work great. Look on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist for used garden sheds. Often free or very cheap if you can move them.
Main modifications needed:
- Add ventilation (crucial!)
- Install proper perches/nest boxes
- Add a landing board and trap
- Maybe reinforce the floor
You could do all that for under $200 if you’re handy.
Pallets. Seriously.
I’ve seen beautiful lofts built almost entirely from free pallets. Takes more labor but the price is right.
Also check construction sites for offcuts and leftover materials. Many will let you take scraps for free.
The ONE thing not to cheap out on: roofing. A leaky roof will cause endless problems. Spend a bit extra there.
Built my first loft for about $400. 8x4 feet, holds 20 birds comfortably.
Used:
- 2x4 framing from Home Depot
- OSB sheeting (cheap but works)
- Metal roofing from agricultural supply
- Hardware cloth for vents
- Recycled windows from Habitat ReStore
Biggest tip: plan your ventilation BEFORE you build. Adding it later is a pain.
This is really helpful! I like the shed conversion idea - there’s actually a couple on Marketplace near me for $50-100.
Will definitely focus on ventilation and roofing. Thanks everyone!
