First young bird season - what to expect?

Hi all

Inherited my grandad’s loft earlier this year. He passed in January and left me about 20 birds including some youngsters.

Never raced before but want to carry on what he started. The young birds are about 5 months old now. Local club says YB season starts in a few weeks.

What should I expect? How do I prepare them? Feeling a bit overwhelmed tbh.

Any advice appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your grandad, Tommy. Good on you for keeping the birds going.

First thing - don’t put too much pressure on yourself. YB season is unpredictable even for experienced flyers. Losses happen, birds get lost, it’s part of the game.

For prep:

  • Make sure they’re trapping well (coming in fast when you call them)
  • Start with short tosses - 5 miles, then 10, then 20
  • Don’t overtrain - 3-4 tosses per week max
  • Get them vaccinated for PMV if not already done

Which club are you with? I know a few Manchester lads.

Bill’s advice is spot on.

One thing I’d add - don’t basket birds that aren’t ready. If they’re not trapping confidently or seem stressed, hold them back. Better to miss a race than lose a bird.

YB sickness is also common this time of year. Watch for any respiratory signs or birds going light. Catch it early.

Light feed the night before basketing - maybe 2/3 of normal. Some guys don’t feed at all but I think that’s too extreme for young birds.

Make sure they have a good drink before you take them to the club.

And mate - don’t worry too much. Your grandad’s birds probably know what they’re doing better than you do right now. Trust them.
