Got a cock bird that’s become a real bully. He’s constantly attacking other birds, chasing them off perches, won’t let anyone near “his” corner of the loft.
He’s a good racer so I don’t want to cull him but it’s becoming a problem. The other birds are stressed.
Anyone dealt with this? Is there a way to calm him down or do I need to separate him permanently?
Aggressive cocks are usually just being… cocks. It’s natural behavior, especially during breeding season.
Options:
- Give him his own section/box - he’s defending territory, so give him one
- Pair him up - a hen often calms them down
- Move him to widowhood section if you fly that system
Culling a good racer for behavior issues seems extreme. I’ve had some of my best birds be complete jerks.
Agree with above. Also check if he’s over-conditioned. Sometimes birds that are too fit become aggressive because they have excess energy.
Might sound counterintuitive but reducing his feed slightly can help.
Had one like this years ago. Best producer I ever had but absolute nightmare in the loft.
Ended up building him his own small section. Problem solved. Some birds just need their space.
The good genes are worth the extra effort.
