How long can pigeons go without water?

Quick question - how long can racing pigeons survive without water?

Asking because I’m planning an overnight trip and wondering if I need someone to check on them or if they’ll be fine with extra water before I leave.

They have a large drinker that holds about 5 liters.

For one night they’ll be absolutely fine with a full drinker. No worries there.

Pigeons can survive 24-48 hours without water in moderate conditions, though I wouldn’t recommend testing it. In hot weather that drops significantly.

5 liters for overnight is plenty unless you have 100+ birds.

Agree, one night is no problem.

Just make sure:

  • Drinker is full before you leave
  • It’s not going to be extremely hot
  • Drinker is stable and can’t tip over

I regularly leave mine for weekends with no issues. Multiple large drinkers just in case.

Perfect, thanks. It’s not too hot at the moment so should be fine. Will top up the drinker before I go and maybe add a second one just to be safe.
