How many birds per square meter?

Planning my loft size. How many birds per square meter (or square foot) is ideal?

I see wildly different recommendations online. Some say 5 birds per square meter, some say 2.

What do you actually run?

The range is big because it depends on:

  • Floor space vs. air space (high ceilings = more birds)
  • Ventilation quality
  • How much time birds spend inside
  • Racing vs. breeding vs. stock birds

My general rule:

  • Racing loft: 4-5 birds per square meter
  • Breeding loft: 2-3 birds per square meter (need nest space)
  • Young bird section: can be denser short term

But more space is always better. Crowded = stressed = sick.

In Germany we say 1 cubic meter of air per bird is the minimum.

So a loft that’s 3m x 3m x 2.5m high = 22.5 cubic meters = 22 birds maximum.

This accounts for both floor space AND air volume. Ventilation matters as much as floor space.

When in doubt, build bigger than you think you need.

Every fancier I know started with “I’ll only keep 20 birds” and ended up with 50. Plan for growth.

I’d rather have a half-empty loft than an overcrowded one. Health problems multiply in tight quarters.
