Got an old cock (11 years) with swelling in one foot joint. He’s limping but still eating fine.
Is this just arthritis from age? Anything I can do to help him be more comfortable?
He’s been a great producer so I want to keep him going as long as possible.
In an 11-year-old, arthritis is very possible. But also check for:
- Gout (uric acid crystite deposits in joints) - more common in older birds
- Infection (bumblefoot if on bottom of foot)
- Old injury flaring up
For comfort:
- Soft bedding, flat perches rather than round
- Anti-inflammatory - low dose aspirin can help (1/4 tablet crushed in water)
- Keep him warm
- Don’t breed him too hard - let him rest between rounds
If it’s gout, reducing protein in diet may help.
Older birds do get achy joints just like older people.
I had a 12-year-old hen with similar issues. Made her a flat platform perch so she didn’t have to grip. Seemed to help.
Also turmeric in water is said to have anti-inflammatory properties. Can’t hurt.
If he’s still producing well, the discomfort is manageable.
I’d focus on quality of life - easy access to food and water, comfortable perching, minimal stress.
At 11 years and still breeding, he’s had a good run. Make his remaining time comfortable.
