Motivation on race day - what works?

Beyond the system (widowhood, natural, etc.), what do you do on basketing day to maximize motivation?

Any little tricks that seem to help?

For widowhood cocks:

  • Show hen 15-20 minutes before basketing
  • Let him in nest box with her briefly
  • Basket while he’s excited

For natural pairs:

  • Don’t feed morning of basketing (hungry = motivated)
  • Time with eggs or young before basketing
  • Keep it calm - stress kills motivation

One thing people overlook: consistency.

Same routine every race day. Birds learn the pattern and know what’s coming. That predictability reduces stress and lets the motivation work.

Chaotic basketing = nervous birds = poor performance.
