Nest box size for racing homers?

Building nest boxes for my breeding section. What size do you recommend?

I’ve seen plans from 30cm to 60cm cubes. What’s the sweet spot?

Want them comfortable but not wasting space.

My recommendation: 40-45cm wide, 40cm deep, 35-40cm tall.

This gives:

  • Room for two birds and growing squeakers
  • Space for nest bowl plus some movement
  • Not so big that it wastes space

Smaller can work but crowded. Bigger is nice but fewer pairs per wall.

I use 50x50cm and never regretted it.

Bigger boxes mean:

  • Happier birds
  • Less fighting between neighbors
  • Room for two nest bowls if needed
  • Easier to clean

Yes, fewer pairs per wall. But my pairs produce better because they’re comfortable.

Don’t forget height at the front.

You need to be able to see in and reach the nest easily. A front lip of 10-15cm keeps the nest in but allows access.

Also consider slide-out bottoms for cleaning. Worth the extra construction effort.
