Pigeons and extreme cold - how cold is too cold?

We’re expecting some extreme cold here - possibly -20°F (-29°C) with wind chill.

My loft isn’t heated. Do pigeons handle extreme cold okay or do I need to do something?

They have shelter from wind and rain but actual temperature will drop inside too.

Healthy pigeons handle cold remarkably well - much better than heat actually.

They can survive -20°F if:

  • Dry (wet + cold = death)
  • Sheltered from wind
  • Well-fed (extra calories for warmth)
  • Plenty of water (doesn’t freeze)

The main dangers:

  1. Water freezing - check multiple times daily
  2. Drafts - direct wind is deadly
  3. Wet bedding - keep it dry

A well-ventilated but draft-free loft is fine without heating.

Minnesota here - we get those temps regularly.

My unheated loft has been fine at -30°F. Key is:

  • Deep bedding (straw or shavings) for insulation
  • Extra corn in the diet (high energy)
  • Multiple water checks - I use heated bases for drinkers
  • Block any drafts but maintain ventilation (ammonia buildup in sealed loft is bad)

They puff up and look miserable but they survive fine.

Don’t add heat unless absolutely necessary.

Birds that are kept artificially warm don’t develop proper winter plumage and suffer more when they eventually feel the real cold.

Let them adapt naturally. Check the essentials (water, draft protection, food) but trust their biology.
