Converting part of my loft for widowhood next season. Currently have open section with perches.
What’s the minimum setup needed for widowhood? Individual boxes essential or can I do it with V-perches and nest boxes?
Budget is limited so trying to prioritize.
The essentials for widowhood:
- Individual boxes for each cock - this is NON-NEGOTIABLE. Each cock needs his own territory to come home to.
- Separate section for hens that cocks can’t access
- A way to show hen before basketing (door, window, carrying hen to cock)
V-perches won’t work. The whole system is based on territorial drive to his box where he expects his hen.
Minimum box size: 40cm x 40cm x 40cm. Bigger is better.
Adding to above:
Essential:
- Individual boxes with fronts that can close
- Good ventilation (widowhood cocks work hard)
- Easy access for you to manage shows
Nice to have:
- Sputnik entry to each box
- Slide-out dividers for pairing
- Viewing window for cocks to see hen section
Start simple. You can upgrade later once you see how the system works for you.
Budget tip: make boxes from cheap OSB or plywood. Doesn’t need to be fancy.
I’ve seen championship widowhood lofts built from recycled materials. It’s the management, not the materials, that makes widowhood work.
