Noticed one of my recently weaned youngsters pecking at and eating droppings. Gross.
Is this a deficiency or just weird behavior?
Coprophagy in young birds can indicate:
- Mineral deficiency (seeking nutrients)
- Gut flora development (actually somewhat natural)
- Boredom/insufficient feed
Make sure minerals and grit are available. Check that it’s eating enough regular feed.
Usually stops as they mature. If it continues into adulthood, investigate further.
