Squeaker with splayed legs - can it be fixed?

One of my squeakers (about 10 days old) has developed splayed legs. Both legs going out sideways instead of straight down.

Is this fixable at this age? I’ve heard of taping them but not sure of the technique.

Or is it kinder to cull?

10 days is on the edge but you can try.

The technique:

  1. Cut a small piece of foam or cardboard about 1 inch wide
  2. Place it between the legs at the correct width (hip-width apart)
  3. Tape both legs to the foam with medical tape - not too tight
  4. Leave for 3-5 days, check progress

The bones are still soft enough to correct. After 2 weeks it becomes much harder.

Success rate is maybe 50-50 at this age. Worth trying before culling.

Also look at the nest. Splayed legs often come from slippery nest bottoms or nests that are too flat.

Add some rough nesting material - pine needles, tobacco stems, or textured nest pads. This gives them grip and prevents it in future youngsters.

I’ve fixed a few with the hobble method.

Use a piece of yarn or soft string tied in a figure-8 around both legs. Keeps them together at the right distance.

Check daily - they grow fast and you don’t want it cutting in. Adjust as needed.

Good luck.
