Vent checking - what am I looking for?

Some fanciers check the vent area when handling. What are they looking for exactly?

Feel weird doing it without knowing what I’m assessing.

Vent area indicates:

  • Fat level: puffy vent = overweight
  • Hen readiness: soft, moist vent = close to laying
  • Health: irritated or soiled vent = digestive issues

In racing condition, vent should be tight and dry. For breeding hens, you’re checking where she is in her cycle.
