What does 'condition' actually mean?

People talk about birds being ‘in condition’ or ‘on form.’ What does this actually mean?

How do you tell if a bird is in condition?

Condition = physical readiness to race. Form = mental eagerness.

Signs of good condition:

  • Bright eyes
  • Tight, silky feathers
  • Warm, dry feet
  • Firm muscles when handled
  • Active and alert behavior

A bird can be healthy but not in racing condition. Condition is that extra edge.
